Happy Easter everyone! Feel content and blessed for the Lord has risen :).
This is the last day of Semana Santa, which was a fantastic week. I spent a large part of it in Panama City with Rachel B, Rachel M, Carol, and Sean. The city is so beautiful and we went to a lot of cool places including: the canal, Casco Antiguo, Isla Taboga and Panamá Viejo. I also enjoyed my 20th birthday while in Panama, decade #2 has begun! The rest of Semana Santa has been relaxing. Yesterday, I ran my farthest yet, 13 miles or a half marathon. Today, I went to church with my friends and called my family back in Michigan.
Today more than ever I am ready to be home. It's tough knowing my family is together celebrating the day of Christ's resurrection and eating a fantastic meal, while I am here by myself with pb & j lol. I will get through and enjoy this week. I will be observing a lot and most likely be reflecting on this incredible experience. Last but not least, I will see you all soon!

It's getting real
In two weeks I will be back in the comfort of my own home in Michigan! Wow. I know I will miss Costa Rica like crazy, but I will be ready to go home as well.
Tomorrow, my friends and I are off to Panama City (the good one) for a few days! I am so excited, it looks unlike any other large city in Central America. We plan to see the Canal (one of the 7 wonders of the world!), go to Old Panama City, spend a day on Taboga Island, go to an awesome national park in the middle of the city, and buy some seafood at one of the biggest markets in the world. Unfortunately, the bus trip is going to take about 15 hours. I know it's going to be worth it, and I can't wait to tell everyone about the trip when I get back. BTW, I will be spending my 20th bday there.
Last weekend I went to Montezuma on the tip of the Nicoya Peninsula. It is a little town with a gorgeous beach and some AMAZING waterfalls. If you walk down this trail for about 20 minutes there are three deep pools of water and two large waterfalls. They didn't even look real, I cannot believe how creative our God is. I jumped off the 2nd waterfall six times, it was about 50 feet high :). I'm still trying to be as adventurous as I can while I have the chance.

Bring on April!
¡Hola!
Last weekend may have been my favorite. Ben, Sean, Scott, Clay, Chris, Laura and I went to Nicaragua to a couple of different places. First, we went to this beautiful beach town called San Juan Del Sur. The first night was very interesting, filled with a drunk 11 year-old, an "artist" and some tomato-throwing gringos. We spent Friday night and Saturday there and then made our way over to Ometepe Island. It is the biggest lake island in the world, and it happens to be in the biggest lake in Central America. We rented bikes for the day and went to a natural spring called "Ojo de agua" and some of us also went on an epic trek to a remote waterfall over 100 feet high in the middle of the island. It would easily take 2 hours by bus to round the entire island. I also learned how to drive a motorcycle for the first time while there! After a couple of nights we made our way back to the rich coast.
April has arrived and that means a few things. One, some of my really good friends have left me :(. However, this gives me the opportunity to get to know some other friends. Two, I have less than a month left in this amazing country. I no longer have an elective class and I'm in my final Spanish class. This month will give me plenty of time to reflect on my experience. I need to make sure I soak everything up, and not think too much about home while I'm here.
This weekend I went to Orosí valley with a few people and it was pretty fun. We went to a beautiful look-out point and also saw the oldest running church in Costa Rica, I think it was built in 1737. I'm trying to be frugal these next couple weeks so I can go to Panama City for Holy week!

Toros a la tica
Dude, you won't believe it. Maybe with my current craziness you will.
Yesterday, Ben and I ran with the bulls in Zapote, San José! We had to get to the stadium early and wait for hours to get our arms stamped. We chatted it up with a bunch of other Ticos. Their slang was very hard to understand, but we got the opportunity to learn some more. After hours of waiting, the event began. So here's how it works... Over 100 lunatics stand in a big dirt ring and wait for an angry raging bull to run out and attack. "The only thing you need to know, is the bulls are trying to kill you," says a fellow Tico. I never knew I could jump a fence so fast. After multiple bulls I survived!
I can't say anything else THAT eventful happened this weekend. Last night we went to Café Mundo again and tonight we are going to an Argentinian Steakhouse because Rachel leaves tomorrow :(.

I Keep Forgetting
I'm on a time crunch so this will be quick!
I am actually in Spanish for Business this month, I made a mistake and went to the wrong class the first day! So the weekend after Panama I went to Jaco and went bungee jumping! By myself... the others just watched. The package also included a HUGE swing, and something called the "Rocket Launcher". It was so much fun!
Last weekend I went to Nicaragua with Bethany, Ben, Hope, and Kelsey. We stayed with a missionary who has been there for 8.5 years, and Hope's friend Marsha, her husband Keith, and two little boys. It was a great weekend :). We got to see life in Nicaragua away from the tourism, and what it would be like to be a missionary there, or really any third world country. I thought it was really cool that Marsha and Keith brought their kids.
This week I decided. I will be working as a high school counselor at SpringHill all summer. I'm VERY excited, and I keep learning that more and more people I know will be working there also. It should be an amazing summer. I can't wait to see what God does!
Again, I will try to update sooner next time! Sorry for those of you who read this!

Holy Canolis!
It has been over two weeks! However, I'm realizing that this blog is becoming just a memory saver for my own benefit because nobody looks at it! OK, wow there is a lot to tell you.
First, I DID end up going to church two Sundays ago and it was a great experience. It was all in Spanish, which was ok, but I found that every time I tried to stop and think I got completely lost! But, the people were very nice. AND the missionaries that brought us to church made us lunch last week! :)
Last weekend I went to Playa Hermosa (Beautiful Beach) with Ben, Bethany, Kelsey, and Rachel. The beach had very hot, black sand and it really was beautiful. The waves were big and sooo powerful, and there were many surfers. We watched the sunset which was pretty, but kind of odd. It literally looked like one red ball and nothing else. We stayed at a very nice hotel that was owned by two gringos from Chicago. There was a great pool and bar/grill area in which we cooked bacon and grilled hotdogs and pineapple. The hotel was so nice that we didn't even go back to the beach the second day.
Last week was the final week of my second Spanish class. I really enjoyed that class and I got my first A for a Spanish class in college! Like I said, we went to the missionaries' house for lunch, that was on Wednesday. On Thursday, Ben, Hope, Kelsey, and I got to experience something very cool. We went to this church place called "Escuadron." It was a big group of people our age and younger. They were like a group of Christian social workers. Children in bad situations had the opportunity to go there for free and play games, sing worship songs, read and hear God's word, go on trips sometimes, and more. We definitely plan to go back. I get a tingly feeling when I realize that Christians truly are almost everywhere worshiping our God. But I know we could have more :).
PANAMA was this weekend, I just got back today. There was a group of ten of us that paid for a trip through the school to Bocas Del Toro for three nights in a hostel. It also included a "dolphin tour" which involved us chasing a solitary dolphin that chose to surface every once in awhile. Also, we got to snorkel over the reefs in the crystal blue water. I really enjoyed the hostel because it was directly ON the water, the room was nice (for a hostel), we got breakfast, and there were a lot of interesting nice people. The town with all the restaurants and stores on the island across from us was great too. Everything was cheaper than Costa Rica, the Panamanian people were different (darker and I think they spoke slower), we got to use US dollars which was refreshing, and the island was actually bigger than we thought. On Sunday we walked about 8 kilometers to a cave in the center and it was amazing! It was big, dark, full of water, and tons of bats. That made my weekend. All in all, we had a great diverse group and I was able to add another country to my list!
Now, March and another Spanish class starts tomorrow. The class is called "Advanced Conversation," I have heard good things so wish me luck. I had my first skype interview last week, with Spring Hill, and I think it went very well. I receive a decision from them this week! But, I've heard nothing more from Grace Adventures... I'm just praying that I can be lead to work wherever God wants me.

Comfortable
I feel strangely comfortable here. I know my way around, I'm very used to the schedule of school and home, my Spanish is getting better, this is nice. Spanish class #2 is halfway over! My typical week 2 wasn't very stressful so it was very nice.
I saw 127 Hours on Wednesday for $2 and it was a VERY good movie, I highly recommend it. On Thursday some friends and I played with some little Tico kids in the park for two hours and it was so much fun. Futbol, "basketball", and kickball. I was dumb and gave myself some huge blisters from not wearing shoes on concrete. This weekend I decided to save some money and stay in San José. It's a very big city and there is plenty to do. Tomorrow there is a good chance that I'll finally be going to church. We met some missionaries last weekend and they invited us :). I'll be sure to let you know how it is.
I OFFICIALLY turned in my application for Grace Adventures and my next one for Spring Hill will be in any moment now, just waiting on one reference. I'm excited to see where God leads me.

February Adventure
Yo. Like I said before, I really enjoy my new Spanish class and professor, that definitely hasn't changed. Last week was very relaxing and good. For my first weekend without a school excursion, Hope, Kelsey, Mel, Ben, Brennan, and I did our own thing in Manuel Antonio. The six of us bought our bus tickets and left San José at 2:30pm. We arrived at the Pacific Ocean in Manuel Antonio at 5:30ish and found our nice Bed & Breakfast. The place was very nice, clean, private, and had a pool! The town of Manuel Antonio was laid back and simple, and the beach was beautiful. We didn't do anything TOO exciting, but it was nice to be on our own and have no schedule or obligations :).
Back to another week of school at Veritas. I don't think this will be a typical busy week #2 of Spanish class. My friends and I still need to figure out what is going on this weekend. No time in Costa Rica can be wasted!
OH! I'm going to turn in an application to be a camp counselor at Grace Adventures VERY soon. I went to that Christian camp for seven years and I would love to go back. I'm beginning to look at jobs very differently. I want to something that I can really enjoy AND that will benefit others. It's definitely a plus to be surrounded by other followers of Christ too :).

God Made Costa Rica First
I keep forgetting about this thing, but how many people are actually reading it?! I guess it doesn't matter, because one day I will look back and read everything. Then, I will realize how much I miss being 19 years old.
Anyway, the day after my last post I went white water rafting on the Río Pacuare and it was incredible! The water was fairly warm, there was some huge rapids, we got stuck!, and just the fact that we were going through a rain forest blew me away. My guide's name was "Mono" and therefore, we were the monkeys! Oo Ah Ah!
After that grand adventure I had my last week of my first Spanish class. Advanced 1 Spanish was tough for me, but I did ok in the class. So, after the exam Friday we had our last excursion to Arenal and Monteverde, it was the best one yet! Friday we arrived and went to a resort with natural hot spring pools and the craziest most dangerous waterslide of my life. Saturday, we started the morning off going to La Fortuna, a giant waterfall deep in the rain forest. I swam around and underneath it in the pool that it made, incredible. Then we took a boat ride across Lake Arenal where we could see most of the volcano. Finally, the day ended with the best van ride of my life, through the green mountains during the sunset. We arrived in Monteverde.
Sunday, we had the zipline canopy tour! There were a 11 platforms and at the end we got to do the tarzan swing. You're attached to a rope and you jump off a 150 foot platform and swiinnngggggg. The entire weekend was amazing. God did a really good job creating this place :).
Now a new Spanish class is underway and I'm enjoying it more than the last. My great friends and I bought our tickets for Manuel Antonio this week, a beach town on the Pacific. I'm ready for another weekend of fun and adventures!

OMG I have a blog!
Sorry everyone,
I forgot that I had a blog so I have a lot to tell you! Well, last weekend we ventured to the other side of Costa Rica. We went to a rasta town called Puerto Viejo on the caribbean and it was amazing (like everything else here). It was the opposite of Tamarindo. Less gringos, more culture, really good food that wasn't crazy expensive, pura vida. There were stray dogs all over and coconuts galore. Unfortunately, we got there on the 22nd consecutive day of rain. But, on Sunday it cleared up and the water was already turning clear blue. I tried surfing again and got yelled at by a rasta. I went to clear things up and realized we were cool when he presumed to sell me some weed. I declined. But overall, it was a great weekend and I plan to go back!
I had a great week of school because we had no tests or presentations. We went on a field trip to the Children's Museum downtown and it was awesome. I ventured downtown another day this week and continued to learn more about the city. Went to my first Costa Rican movie yesterday! Ha... It was Tron in English, but it only cost $4! Today, I went "fishing" up in the mountains and ate some trout that I caught. Then, I went to downtown Cartago (the old capital) and got to go inside a 375 year old basilica during a service! The place was so beautiful. I feel like I'm just rambling now but that's ok!
I have come to find that God has blessed me in so many ways with this trip. The country and people are beautiful. I have made some amazing friends already. I'm learning a lot of Spanish and I still have 13 weeks left! I am so thankful and cannot imagine what else he has in store for me here.

Tamarindo
Yo,
It has been a few days I know. I finished my first week of classes in Advanced 1 Spanish. I'm definitely one of the worst in my class, but I'm attempting to keep up. My professor didn't bump me down so that's good news! This past weekend many students and I went to the city of Tamarindo on the Pacific Ocean. We took a bus for 6 hours to the small tourist town. It felt weird being with so many white people. I didn't like hearing so much English. Anyway, I tried surfing for the first time! And some of us also went on a boat ride through the mangroves. It was a great weekend and now I'm back in the middle of a very busy week of school. This weekend we are going to the Caribbean to the town of Puerto Viejo. It supposed to be full of rastas :-). Talk to you later!

Getting acclamated
Hola
I feel like I have learned so much already. I have been venturing around the city, which is very big, and I'm learning about the good restaurants and hot spots. Yesterday my second roommate, Brennan, arrived and we still have one more coming tonight. Today was orientation at school and it was very long. There were many nice international students though and I am excited for school tomorrow. I placed into the class I wanted to! Today I also signed up for an excursion package which involves going to a different place in Costa Rica the next four weeks. I am happy with everything so far, I could get used to this :). I feel very blessed.

I feel like I have learned so much already. I have been venturing around the city, which is very big, and I'm learning about the good restaurants and hot spots. A New World
It's my second day in San José and I love the place and culture already. My house is beautiful and I have a great family, Helga (my mom) and Antonio (little brother). The house is colorful, open, full of art, decorations, and cats. Many people in Costa Rica hate cats and try to kill them so Helga has made this their oasis. San José is a big city. Ben (another international student) and I walked around for awhile today and explored. Many things are the same and many are different. I have orientation tomorrow!
